True Love

  1. Thanksgiving Song - Johnny Cash - The best love song ever. If you love someone, really love them, heart and soul, sit with them and watch this. It will make you so happy. The moment is magic. 3. I walk the line - Johnny Cash - When a man truly loves a woman he vows in his heart to devote himself to her. Good love synergizes and makes both persons happier, more content & more complete.
  4. Hurt - Johnny Cash. Johnny almost died. June helped save him. Johnny loved her so much. The greatest force for good in the world is love. Love empowers, emboldens, inspires to help, to protect, to acheive to do what's right. Love creates positive feedback cycles of goodness.

Sad Love

  1. Almost doesn't count - Brandy
  2. Photographs and memories - Jim Croce - he's one of the all time best for sad love songs. These songs remind you of the pain of breaking up with that first love, eg. the high school honey. She was great, but you just grow apart. I was in love with a musician. We used the rhythm method. She played piano at Juliard. She became like other musicians, always wanting to go to all the big shows like Les Mis. I loved going to Les Mis once. She wanted to go over & over. Doctors need to go to bed early to get to work early. Musicians like to stay out late and see all the musical talent in the city of Chicago or New York. I learned a lot about music and life from her, but eventually, she started smoking cigarettes and that was it. We split up.
  3. These dreams - Jim Croce - beautiful. Romantic love is great. It is one of the best things in the world. It is tough to say goodbye to all the memories when you break up. It seems like such a waste. This song gets it right.

  5. Winter - Tori Amos
  6. Momma Liked the Roses - Elvis
  7. Home Again - Carole King
  8. So Far Away - Carole King
  9. Don't Leave me this way - Thelma Houston - this song also helped me when I was grieving over the death of my mother. I don't know how to explain it. You don't want to lose that person from your life. Even though the song makes you sad, you want to hear it. Maybe it's because I would rather be sad thinking about her in the present, than accepting that she had died and was in the past. A very smart man, told me that the soul of a person lives on in their loved ones. I think this is true. When familiar situations occur, I think of her words in my head. Eg. I remember what my mother used to say to me. "Do you know how much I love you? Do you know how much I love you?" This is a very good way to talk to your children or to someone you truly love. Love has power. When someone knows that they are truly loved, it gives them some protection from the outside world. They have more confidence in themselves. They will not accept being mistreated in a social situation, because they know they deserve to be loved.
  10. Changes - Ozzy Osbourne - link to live--> studio version is much better--> I listened to to this song for a year after my mother died.

Unconditional Love, Love of One's Mother

  1. Momma liked the roses - Elvis -when a boy is young he simply expects his mother to take care of him. When he gets older he starts to appreciate her more & more. I was very close to my mother. I would not allow my father to talk disrespectfully to her.
  2. Los Caminos de la Vida - Vicentico (Spanish) --> beautiful sad song about a son coming to terms with having to accept his mother's illness and death. Intelligent men are often very close to their mothers. My father was a bigshot psychiatrist. He was chairman of two departments. However, I learned my mother knew more about people than he did. He would say stuff like, "just go to the meeting and tell the truth. You are right and the group should follow the logic to this conclusion." I would take his advice and alienate people. No one cared that I was right. Decisions were made based on the local politics. My mother would say things like, "it is more important to stay friends than to argue about a silly little thing like that. Let it go. Forget about it. Just try to do a good job and be nice." She did everything for me. I owe my life to her. I have had a lot of sad moments in my life, but the saddest was the death of my mother. I cried for a year. I was angry with myself for not being able to save her. She was diagnosed with cancer when I was a 3rd year med student. I didn't know enough to help her until later when it was too late and she had metastatic disease.
  3. Changes - Ozzie. I cried for a year when my mother died. I played this song over and over again. The song made me think about her and I wanted to think about her. Finally, you just have to accept it. You still hear her voice in her head. When I was a young man, I just wanted to be like my father, a smart doctor. After turning 35 I have tried more and more to develop other aspects of personality like my mother did. She always knew how to say something kind and pleasant and fun. She made everyone smile and feel welcome. She adopted 2 girls and basically turned her life around. She brought a lot of happiness into the world. "There are some persons who bring happiness wherever they go, & others who take it away"- Oscar Wilde. She created happiness & laughter wherever she went.

Heavy Metal Ballads

  1. November Rain - Guns & Roses - gunners were hot for a while. This song & video were at the apex of this phase. Slash was going out w/Tracy Lords. Axel could sing, but he was so crazy and always getting into trouble. I've heard that singers tend to try to isolate themselves fromt he rest of the band in effort to protect their voices. This can lead to xs social isolation induced craziness which when combined w/substance abuse leads to to self destructive behavior and the dissolution of the band. To be great at anything takes a certain amount of intelligence. I've heard that drumming is somehow less associated with intelligence, & hence we have "drummer jokes." A lot of drummers seem to have problems with substance abuse and just general stupidity eg. Tommy Lee of Motley Crue.
  2. Catch the Rainbow - Rainbow - a beautiful love song with a rural setting
  3. Baby I'm gonna leave you - Led Zepplin
  4. Aces High (Churchill speech) - Iron Maiden
  5. Mistreated - Rainbow --> I used to like to listen to this when I was mad about something in college. It helped me to mellow out. The singer seemed so much more unhappy than me, that it cheered me up.
  6. Run with the wolf - Rainbow
  7. Sixteenth Century Greensleeves- Rainbow - great song. Medieval ballad about saving a princess who is locked up in the castle of the enemy. In college, the best wrestlers on the team all listened to heavy metal music like this. It was part of an effort to try to stay mentally tough in such a wimpy place. Wrestlers were not well understood in California, especially at a nerdy place like Stanford. Wrestling fits better with Iowa & Oklahoma. Ie. places where there is nothing to do in the winter (or the summer). Just kidding. I spent a summer at Iowa State & loved it. I also spent a summer at Madison, U of Wisc. There was so much more to do at these places. At Stanford, the parties sucked, figuratively, not literally. Weekends were mostly just days to study more and to play sports. Unless the HTH (Home Town Honey) was visiting etc.
  8. Still I'm sad - Rainbow
  9. Fly People Fly - Scorpions
  10. In Your Park - Scorpions
  11. Pictured life - Scorpions

  13. We'll Burn the Sky - Scorpions
  14. Baby Please Don't Go - ACDC
  15. Air Dance - Black Sabbath
  16. Never say die - Black Sabbath
  17. In Union We Stand - Overkill - High testosterone, angry heavy metal. Watch out.
  18. Hallowed be thy name - Iron Maiden is one of the best, perhaps the best heavy metal group of all time. The singer has been called "leather lungs". Just listen and you'll see why. The guitar is so tight.Great guitar solo at around 3:20.
  19. Wasted years - Iron Maiden. "From the coast of gold, across the seven seas, I'm traveling on far and wide,...." and so the adventure begins.
  20. The Trooper - Iron Maiden.- Great guitar solo at around 2:20. More fightin music. The best guys on my college wrestling team at Stanford, all read Savage Sword of Conan comic books and listened to heavy metal music especially Rainbow in those days. It helped us to stay mentally fierce in that wimpy environment.
  21. People like to make fun of heavy metal, and yes it is true that most of it does suck. But it is also true that the best USA Rock & Roll musicians gravitated to heavy metal. And many of the best rock & roll songs, guitarists, singers etc. are from heavy metal groups. Also it is primal & resonates with something deep within us. Modern society conspires to promote oxytocin man. Oh sure, yes its true that oxytocin man maintains many important things. However, it is also true that boldness, braveness & brilliance often comes from testosterone man. And any mature man can tell you, that his woman often encourages him to be more "oxytocin man", but that she seems to like him better when he is in "testosterone mode"
  22. Aces High - Iron Maiden - Begins with the Churchill speech. Great guitar solo at 2:48.
  23. The Prisoner - Iron Maiden. Great guitar solo at 3:45. One of the all time best in any rock song..

  25. Bleeding of me - metallica

  2. This land is your land - Woody Guthrie
  3. Leaving on a Jet Plane - John Denver
  4. Leaving on a jet plane - Peter, Paul & Mary
  5. 500 Miles - Peter, Paul & Mary - how sad. It makes you want to cry. Long distance relationships can be beautiful, but they are also painful. It is painful to be far away from someone you love. When I lived in California and my love was in Chicago the emotional intensity of getting together & then having to say goodbye was intense.
  6. Blowin in the wind - Peter, Paul & Mary
  7. Stewball was a racehorse - tribute band for Peter Paul & Mary. In college, I worked a summer as a camp counselor and taught this song to the kids.

  9. Take me out to the ball game - Frank Sinatra & Gene Kelly

Stoner Music

  1. Box of rain - Grateful dead. Pleasant sound. Nice for making love in the afternoon. Not a lot of substance.
  2. Uncle John's Band - Grateful Dead
  3. Ripple - Grateful Dead - Yeah they sound great. I admit it. But I can't listen to this stuff. It makes me to content. I want to stay hungry. To pursue something with intensity. To do something with my life. You listen to this & you just want to get drunk, have sex with your girlfriend and go to sleep. It makes it seem like there is no point in getting worked up about anything. But you have to get excited about something if you are ever going to acheive anything. The guys who listened to this stuff a lot 16-22 yo in my cohort all ended up poorly eg. dropping out of H.S. or college and underacheiving severely relative to their abilities. This music is sort of the siren song to apathy.
  4. Rain song - Led Zeppelin - From the Golden Days of Rock. LZ just had it, the chords, the singer, you name it. LZ music was fun to listen to, but it also doesn't seem to go anywhere. It's not for exercise or sex. It's kind of just there. Kind of "stoner music" or "ear candy". Pleasant but without substance. I don't consider it heavy metal, because it's not that heavy. Heavy metal music used to imply fightin & lovin. Not dippy, "lets get stoned & look at the flower petals type of stuff." The best LZ music is the "calling out the woman" songs eg. Babe, I'm gonna leave you. That's when they get passionate.
  5. Going to California - Led Zeppelin - California was once the place of dreams. The land of milk & honey, babes & money, wild & sunny.
  6. Wish you were here - Pink floyd - classic stoner music. Knuckle heads like to debate the meaning of these 'deep lyrics". They would be better off doing their homework. Pink Floyd is sort of the English counterweight to the American Grateful Dead. Sounds great, but does not take you anywhere good. I like music to inspire me in some way eg. to be stronger for lifting weights, for dancing, for making love etc.
  7. Shine on you crazy diamond - Pink Floyd

Christmas

  1. Frosty the snowman
  2. It won't seem like Christmas without you - Elvis - one of the all time great Christmas songs. It broke my heart when I could not see my HTH one Christmas in college. After first love is over, Christmas seems routine until the first grandchild can appreciate it. Then it seemed like Christmas died when my mother died. Then the 1st child makes Christmas seem special again.

  2. Amazing Grace - Susan Boyle
  3. Amazing Grace - Elvis Presley
  4. Amazing Grace - Royal Scots Dragoon - perhaps the saddest version of Amazing Grace. It calls to mind the death of a loved one. Sad, but positive because it reminds you of them and your love for them, and that is good. It is love that gives life meaning.
